Weekly Update // #ForTheBirdsLive Edition

March 31, 2011

How’s everyone feeling after the gig last night? Heyday is still ringing in our ears and hearts, so we can only imagine how those of you that were actually at the show must feel! Even though the feed was dodgy in the beginning and Twitter crashed before the band even started, we still consider the live broadcast of the For The Birds anniversary show from Vicar Street last night to be a massive success. It was a great feeling of community, thinking about everyone else around the world who were tuning in to hear The Frames bring to life these meaningful songs from a specific moment in their history.

Thank you so much to the band and friends (especially Claire, Donal, Leon, Jerry and Shane) for everything they did to make this concert available to those who wanted to be there but could not. If you have any feedback about the live broadcast, please take a moment to share your constructive feedback with Donal by filling out this form!

We are grateful for the lucky folks in the audience took the time to record and share the gig. We’ve added video of the songs that have already been uploaded along with some photos and reviews on the gig page. If were at the show and would like to share your experience, feel free to drop us a line!

The other thing occupying our minds this week was the announcement of the Eddie Vedder/Glen Hansard US tour this summer. We’ve posted the dates with links to local announcements and/or ticket sales on the Glen dates page and we believe the general sale for most of the shows is tomorrow, April 1st at 10am local time. Good luck to everyone trying for tickets!

Aside from that we’ve no other updates for the week, but we already have some gems queued up for the coming week and of course will add anything else that comes up from last night to the gig page. Into April we go…..

Weekly Update // 24 March

March 24, 2011

March is the month of spring breaks at our houses, 3 weeks worth spread out between us, so we’re both a little cuckoo and needing of our own spring break! Perhaps we’ll take our wooooo spring break! to one of the Eddie Vedder/Glen Hansard gigs some weekend this summer!

In the meantime, we have some updates to the site this week per the usual, so check it out:

– a new page for Glen’s bit at the White House on St. Patrick’s Day
– Glen speaking with Dave Fanning at RTE2 FM about the Paddy’s Day gig at the bottom of the Radio section (and on the gig page)
– video for The Commitments in Killarney on 15 March
– reviews, photos, videos (including Glen doing the Phil Lynott song Old Town) from The Commitments at the O2 19 March (and Andrew Strong killing it on The Land Of A Thousand Dances, seriously)
– link to a gig review added for 16 October 2005 at Irving Plaza in NYC
– link to a gig review at the state.ie site added for 13 Dec 2010 Vicar Street
– cool poster from 2005 Sasquatch Festival added to Gig Posters page (for sale through link to artist site)

Of course, our next Thursday update is the day after the For The Birds 10th Anniversary show at Vicar Street. Given that the gig is 5 hours ahead of us, hopefully we’ll be able to fill out the 30 March FTB page where we’ve already put up a couple of previews including a scan of the Irish Times spread from 22 March (thanks Carol!). Until then, ramble on….

Weekly Update // Saint Patrick’s Day!

March 16, 2011

We’re a little giddy about the fact that we have the opportunity to wish Happy St. Patrick’s Day to a bunch of Irish people all at once, so Happy St. Paddy’s Day to our Irish friends! And of course to everyone else since we all have Ireland in our hearts if we’re hanging out here, right? We hope it’s been a fine one so far.

This week’s big thanks goes out to Sara and Laura, you gals rule! Ok, so we’re super excited this week to share with you one of the most amazing gigs we’ve seen (not in person that is)- the lads’ performance at the InterCeltic Festival in August of 2002. Highly recommended for your next spare hour (but we’ve divided it by song to make for easier viewing).

We’re also honored to now have the documentary It’s Just A Band as an important part of our Frames archive here. It’s Just A Band is a documentary about The Frames that was made by Dutch filmmakers Helmut Boeijen, Tim Klok and Menno van den Berg in 2005. The film is also available to watch at www.theframes.ie.

In addition to the great adds above, we’ve also got:

Press:
2010(ish)? – The Greatest Band You Don’t Know at shakenstir.co.uk – thoughts on the band over 20 years with video/photos
19 October 2005 – Lessons in Niceness and the Joys of In-Stores at Boise Weekly by Ryan Peck
March 2005 – Metro gig preview and Interview with Time Out Chicago by Matthew Lurie
March 2005 – Interview with Colm by jofixi at fasterlouder.com.au about Australian Tour
18 November 2005 – Article/Interview with Colm about Burn The Maps and such at Irish World
December 2007 (we think) – Q&A with Rob in Chicago’s Goodman Theatre newsletter!

– 2 more videos on the Whelan’s 7 & 8 March gig page: Glen- Backbroke & Glen/Liam- Nina Simone’s See-Line Woman
– a little 2011 write up about For The Birds at the FTB page (2 more weeks!)
– 3 videos from The Royal Theatre and links to photos and a review of The Commitments’ gig in Castlebar, IE on the 14th
– 2 videos of The Commitments’ performance in Killarney on 15 March
– 2 videos of The Commitments performing at Liberty Hall in Dublin on 9 March for Today FM

We hope that’s enough to keep you occupied until next Thursday! Sláinte!

Weekly Update // Mar 10

March 10, 2011

Thanks and hello again to all the new folks checking out the site each day! We hope you’re enjoying looking at it as much as we enjoy making it.

We’ve been excited to hear all the good reports out of Dublin about the Glen & Liam (and, and…) gigs from Whelan’s on Monday and Tuesday night. Very cool! As part of this week’s update we’ve made a page for those gigs with the details we’ve been able to cull from various sources.

More updates from this past week include:
– 4 songs from a Marlay Park gig from 2004 (the Hollocaine rap!)
– a very nice tribute to For The Birds written by Ian Whitty for the Noise blog
– The Commitments performing Mustang Sally and Chain of Fools (incl short interview bit of Glen) on The Late, Late Show on RTE
– video by Patrick Glennon of Say It To Me Now from Glen’s recent City Winery gig in NYC
– video by the Vibe for Philo folks of Glen doing Thin Lizzy’s Jailbreak with the Hoodoo Rhythm Devils in January
– a new addition to Your Stories – a blog post about seeing The Frames for the first time in Philly in 2003
– a ticket scan from the Avalon gig in LA from 30 Nov 2010
– lastly, we put all of the Zoran Orlic photos we used on the homepage photo slideshow in January and February into the Photography section, so if you missed those the first time around you can see them there

Special thanks this week to Jackie, Patrick, Linda, Pamela, Heather and various folks on the Frames message board! : )
Until next time….
