6 December Update

December 6, 2011

It was one year ago today that we had the idea to make this website. A whole year! The next day we had the name, and the day after that we started building it. The next 2 weeks that followed were full of many, many hours of online time at night, after the kids were in bed and in the in-between times of getting ready for the holidays. It was all totally worth it when we launched the site on Dec. 21 and got so much lovely and wonderful feedback.

Thanks to OITS, we’ve made new friends & acquaintances all over the world. Thanks to the Frames community for all your contributions and spending time on the site and thanks to the band for being awesome about it. It’s lead to many unexpected surprises, friendships and learning opportunities. Yeah, yeah it’s just a website, but it’s all true!

It’s worth noting that today the Once musical in NYC is having its Opening Night. We’re heading there together this weekend to see it ourselves and are quite excited as we’ve heard great things.

On to the updates!
(By the way- we just upgraded one of our video plugins and they are still working out some bugs, so if you see anything wacky going on with videos, please let us know. )

As most of you know we hosted an auction of stellar Frames related items to raise money for the Irish Fragile X Society. The final bid total was just over $1600! Thanks so much to all the amazing fans who tried their luck. Truly a grand effort and awesome help for the IFXS!

There’s been a little slew of gigs in the past 10 days or so, including the unbelievable Mic Tribute gig on the 29th. The list of songs and performers is mind-boggling. Check it out if you haven’t yet! Loads of gorgeous videos (enough that you may have to be extra patient while the page loads), you can just see the love there that night.

+ 26.11 – Heyday Festival – a celebration of Mic in his home town
+ 1.12 – Other Voices 10th Anniversary in Dingle. There’s a lovely preview of the weekend featuring the town and a little history of the program. What a beautiful place. Then we get a preview (in the form of God Bless Mom) of what’s to be released in 2012.
+ 2.12 – Glen joins Ronan Wilmot to benefit the New Theatre in Dublin

+ Glen took NPR’s World Cafe on a little tour of Dublin last month. Video and audio here.
+ We added a, um, unique fan story to Your Stories!
+ We’ve been keeping up with all the news and reviews of both the Once musical & the Swell Season movie when they pop up.
+ Oh and we’ve added one 2012 gig for Glen at the Rolling Stones ‘Hot Rocks’ Tribute at Carnegie Hall in NYC. (Reminds us we need to make a Glen 2012 section!)

Think that’s about it for now. You can keep up with us over at Twitter & Facebook as well where we blab more often. Enjoy the season!

A Sense of Place – NPR’s World Cafe

December 1, 2011

This week NPR’s ‘World Cafe’ featured Dublin in its ‘Sense of Place’ series. There is an audio portion here and then Glen takes host David Dye on a little walking musical tour of the city.

Throughout the week, World Cafe travels to Dublin, Ireland — the first stop in a quarterly series called Sense of Place. We hope to give you an idea of the past and present of the city’s local music scene and provide tips from musicians and music lovers for those hoping to visit this culturally rich town.

In the video above, enjoy a virtual walking tour of the vibrant musical city of Dublin. Our main tour guide in Dublin is Glen Hansard, the Academy Award–winning songwriter and actor from the film Once, and the leader of Irish group The Frames. Ever the charmer and eager to share his knowledge, Hansard leads World Cafe host David Dye around the old haunts where Hansard got his start as an artist. Undeterred by the rainy weather, the two search for busking musicians and stop at the old Irish pub, O’Donoghue’s, for a pint and some live music. Much to the crowd’s delight, Hansard joins in to play a few tunes.

Click here to learn more about Sense of Place, and check out WXPN’s interactive map of Dublin.

Online Auction to Benefit Irish Fragile X Society

November 15, 2011

On 29 November, The Frames, The Mary Janes & Friends will be playing a gig in honor of Mic Christopher. All proceeds from the gig will be donated to the Irish Fragile X Society. In conjunction with this gig, we will be hosting an online auction also to raise money for the IFXS which needs a great deal of support. Claire & the lads have been wonderful in donating some stellar and unique items for new and old, Frames and Swell Season fans alike (some of these would make amazing holiday gifts!) Bidding begins on eBay this Friday the 18th at 10am Dublin time (5am EST). Friday is the first European Fragile X Awareness Day.  Go to our page here to learn more about Fragile X and see what’s going to be up for bidding so far. You will also be able to link through to each item at eBay from here once the auctions go live on Friday, so keep an eye on this page. Thank you and please spread the word!

2 November Update

November 2, 2011

Hey all, how’s it going? We’ve rounded up a few items for the site in the past month. Looking forward to hearing all about the big 29 November gig with The Frames, The Mary Janes & Friends at Vicar Street to celebrate and honor Mic Christopher. All proceeds from the gig will go to benefit the Irish Fragile X Society. See the most recent Frames newsletter for more information!

We’ve continued to add stuff to all of Glen’s recent gig pages, so have a sort through his dates page to find some goodies. Includes new pages for the Other Voices NYC gigs last week. Night 1 & Night 2.

Last month, Graham & Johnny performed with Whole Lotta Zep at the Sugar Club for the Led Zeppelin IV Live gig celebrating the album’s 40th (!) Anniversary. Yes, multiple drummers together, love it! Check out some awesome video and pics here.

Graham is also doing some gigs with Bronagh Gallagher this week.
2 Nov – Sandinos in Derry
3 Nov – Oh Yeah in Belfast
4 Nov – Whelan’s in Dublin

Rob has been touring in Europe with Marketa on her solo outing supporting her new album Anar. They are going to be in Ireland the next few days!

Once: A New Musical is in rehearsals right now and starts in about 2 weeks in NYC. If you’re interested in keeping up with that, The New York Theatre Workshop tweets, and Steve Kazee, who is playing Glen’s roll, tweets as well.

We continue to add press about The Swell Season movie here. We’ve recently added some interviews and reviews focusing on the techie movie bits. The distributor has a list of cities where the film will be playing.

Lastly, we’ve popped up a few gorgeous posters from Prague to Posters, added a What Happens When..video as well as more photos to The Frames’ gig from June at DeBarra’s Folk Club and posted a few photos by Zoran Orlic to Glen’s PJ20 Weekend page from early in September.

Thanks everyone, see ya next time…..
