25 November Vicar Street gig added

September 27, 2013

Another Glen Hansard + full band show has been added to Vicar Street on November 25. Tickets go on sale 4 October for €30 with all proceeds benefiting the Peter McVerry Trust and the Dublin Simon Community. Mark Geary and his band will support. Click through to read more about PMV Trust & Dublin Simon.

For 30 years, Peter McVerry Trust has tackled homelessness in Ireland. In the mid-1970s Fr Peter McVerry began working with young people in Dublin’s north inner-city witnessing first-hand the problems of homelessness and deprivation. In 1983, as the number of young people experiencing homelessness grew, he established the charity, known as Peter McVerry Trust.

Over its 30 year history, Peter McVerry Trust was provided vital housing and support services, which have helped thousands of young people to rebuild their lives. More than 3,500 individuals were supported by the charity last year, with 74% between the ages of 18-35 and the youngest just 13.

Dublin Simon Community works to prevent and address homelessness in Dublin, Kildare and Wicklow. We provide services at all stages of homelessness and enable people to move to a place they can call home. At Simon, we listen to people who turn to us for help and do everything we can to support them to move out of homelessness into independent living. We strive to empower people to access, secure and retain a home of their own by reducing the reliance on short-term emergency accommodation and providing permanent supported housing for people to sustain a home in their local community. Moving people into supported housing produces life-enhancing and life-saving results and is more cost-effective in the long run.

The organisation was founded by a group of Trinity and UCD students in 1969, who began by providing much-needed soup and sandwiches to people who were sleeping rough in Dublin city centre. In addition to theSoup Run, which still goes out 365 nights of the year, Dublin Simon provide many services which aim to help those who are sleeping rough on the streets, people who are in their own accommodation but at risk of homelessness and those who are at any of the stages in between.

Honor The Treaty

September 18, 2013

The Frames recently provided their song People Get Ready to this video (click through) in conjunction with Honor The Treaty which asks the Federal Government of America to return Lakota lands to the Lakota Nation as it committed to in the Treaty of 1868 (before gold was discovered in the Black Hills). The Black Hills, or Paha Sapa, is the most sacred of all places to the the Lakota People (Lakota are known also known as Sioux). You can check out their website and sign their petition here: http://honorthetreaty.us/

Colm TG4 Documentary score

September 18, 2013

Colm provided the music for a documentary called An Bhean A Shiúil Trasna Mheiriceá (The Woman Who Walked Across America) that will air tonight (Sept 18) on TG4 in Ireland at 9:30pm. We’re sharing this description from the TG4 website because it sounds like an amazing story! We’ll let you know if this becomes available to watch online after it airs.

ETA: You can watch the film at TG4’s website here.

“Documentary on Mary Devine who emigrated, married a violent man and found herself isolated with him in the Mid-West of the USA. Undaunted, she did the extraordinary, put her child on her back and walked hundreds of miles to New York where she made enough money to pay her passage home. Having arrived in Cóbh she put the child on her back again and walked all the way home to Corca Dhuibhne where she lived out the rest of her life on her home ground. This is a story of emigration and the search for the elusive promised land but most of all it is a story of self-belief, hope and survival.”

Glen to join John Kelly for a chat & songs

September 13, 2013

On Halloween night, 31 October, Glen will join writer John Kelly for an evening of Music & Conversation at The Helix DCU in Dublin. Tickets are €25 on sale now here! Click through to read the press release.

Glen Hansard is delighted to announce a date for The Helix, DCU, Dublin on Thursday October 31st – Glen Hansard and John Kelly – Music & Conversation. A unique and intimate night’s entertainment is in store this Halloween when Glen and John sit down to discuss and explore Glen’s long and successful songwriting career.

Best known for his work with The Frames, The Swell Season and in the feature film Once, for which he won an Academy Award, Glen’s first solo album Rhythm and Repose was released to wide acclaim last year and he has been busy touring in both the US and Europe since.

Glen’s recent run of summer shows received fantastic reactions all round, with long sets, surprise special guests and excellent reviews to boot. After the Iveagh Gardens and Galway Arts Festival, Glen finished on a high when he was invited to join Bruce Springsteen on stage in Kilkenny for a rendition of Drive All Night –

Since the release of his solo album, Rhythm and Repose (Plateau) last year, Glen has been busy touring in both the US and Europe.

John Kelly is a writer and award-winning broadcaster. His novel, From Out Of The City will be published in 2014. At this event, the two will discuss and explore Glen’s life and inspirations and demonstrate the power of a good song through entertaining conversation and a few choice acoustic numbers!

“Glen Hansard is a gifted, emotive frontman who sings as if he must, with a heart on his sleeve that is constantly throbbing.” —The New York Times
