Notes: A great vibe in a packed Millennium Park. Summer in Chicago. The fog previously settled over Lake Michigan begins to roll in before ‘Falling Slowly’, bringing a chill but a sense of magic as well. From the stage the band watch the surrounding skyscrapers become obliterated. The energy is heightened further by beautiful participation on ‘High Hope’ and with a surprise cover of Pearl Jam’s ‘Smile’, played to conjure the spirit of a sorely missed Eddie Vedder. During ‘Fitzcarraldo ‘bubbles drift through the front of the pavilion and above the band. Soon the fog reaches the stage itself. A young girl named Roisin McKernan is invited up to sing an Irish trad song, during which Glen leads Joe in a slow dance. The night ends with crowd pressing forward, everyone on their feet, singing ‘The Auld Triangle’. It’s like leaving Ireland only to arrive in Ireland, Glen says.
