Setlist: Talking with the Wolves, Love Don’t Leave Me Waiting – Respect (Aretha Franklin), Low Rising, Bird of Sorrow, Astral Weeks (Van Morrison), High Hope, Fitzcarraldo, Don’t Do It (Marvin Gaye/The Band)
Notes: Pure, unencumbered joy. “There is nowhere else in the world we’d rather be!” Glen announces. Much of the crowd must feel the same way. It’s a joy volley. You can feel the lift when Graham and Rob take the backing vocals for ‘Respect’ (“Just a little bit!”) and turn them over to the audience. In a moment where such a danger feels lightyears away, ‘Low Rising’ is introduced as being about that “last drop of optimism. If it dries up, you’re fucked.” With the horn and extra string players, ‘Fitzcarraldo’ is an absolute monster. It could crush you. The set ends with a Levon Helm dance party under a beautiful Chicago sky.
