13 September 2012 // Chicago, IL // Shedd Aquarium

glen_shedd_courtneySetlist: The Dolphins (Fred Neil), Love Don’t Leave Me Waiting – Respect (Aretha Franklin), Low Rising – Sexual Healing (Marvin Gaye), Bananaman, In These Arms, Say it to Me Now, Gold (Interference), Bird of Sorrow, Astral Weeks, Come Away to the Water, Oxford Town (Bob Dylan), This Gift, Lucia, High Hope – Falling Slowly, Such Great Heights (The Postal Service) (with Sam Beam), The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down (The Band) (with Sam Beam and Brendan McDonough), Get Up, Stand Up (Bob Marley)

Notes: Due to poor weather, the gig is moved inside and the stage set up in front of the beluga whales. The atmosphere is calm and humbling, Glen saying he’d tailored his set to do his best not to disturb them. (Simon, during soundcheck, had been sprayed when testing a rather loud distortion pedal.) ‘Bananaman’ is played for the “little people” in the audience, of which there are many. Adults and children alike keep an eye on the whales drifting back and forth behind Glen. It’s rather fascinating to see which tunes they respond to. After a gorgeous version of ‘Come Away to the Water’, ‘Oxford Town is played seemingly spontaneously on the baritone ukulele, Glen working out the chords before beginning. Sam Beam is in town and called up to sing one of his songs, staying for a tribute to Levon Helm that also includes stagehand Brendan McDonough. ‘Get Up, Stand U’p is sung to a loop Glen records, closing the night in a rousing manner.
