[Thanks to Jules for sharing her review!]
Glen Hansard was a guest at Doveman’s Burgundy Stain series at Le Poisson Rouge in NYC on January 14th. It was suggested during on-stage banter that Thomas Bartlett (Doveman) picked Glen’s song list for the evening. Glen played 4 songs:
– Races
– Your Heart’s Not in it, Babe (Lucia?) – heard during several of the Nov/Dec Frames shows
– Friend/Enemy (w/ a bit of Rave On John Donne), with new lyrics written in the dressing room before the show, according to Glen from the stage
– What Happens When the Heart Just Stops (w/ the Bad Bone bit at the end)
LPR is a relatively small venue, and the salon-like premise of the concert series lent a casual, collaborative vibe to the evening. Glen hadn’t played with the bassist and drummer before, so there were quick primers at the beginning of songs to get them up to speed. Both performers and the audience seemed to be having a great time, and it was really interesting to watch the process of an unrehearsed performance.
A personal highlight was WHWtHJS; Bartlett’s piano accompaniment worked really well with the song, and even with the addition of bass and drums the performance still kept a powerful and intimate feel.
Glen came back on stage to sing backup vocals along with Beth Orton and Annie Clark for two Doveman songs. All in all, a great evening. Still, I’m already jonesing for my next fix.
