6 October 2012 // San Francisco, CA // The Fillmore

Support: The Lost Brothers

Main Set: The Storm, It’s Coming, Talking with the Wolves, Love Don’t Leave Me Waiting – Respect (Aretha Franklin), Philander, When Your Mind’s Made Up, Low Rising, Bird of Sorrow, Leave*, In These Arms*, Astral Weeks* (Van Morrison) – Gloria* (Van Morrison) – Smile* (Pearl Jam), This Gift, Moving On, High Hope – Maybellene (Chuck Berry), Fitzcarraldo, Revelate, Where is My Mind (Pixies), Star Star – Hotellounge (deus) – The Most Beautiful Widow in Town (Sparklehorse), Song of Good Hope

Encore: Say it to Me Now* – Gold (Interference)**, Song with Jordan Cook aka Reignwolf & Graham, Corrina, Corrina*** (Bob Dylan), Bananaman, Don’t Do It***, Drive All Night (Bruce Springsteen) – Caravan (Van Morrison) – When Heart is Open (Van Morrison) – Feels Like Rain (John Hiatt) – Parting Glass (Traditional)

Notes: Glen, Graham and the horn section join The Lost Brothers during their opening set for ‘I Shall Be Released’. There is high energy from the start of the show and a good (and mostly respectful) crowd, bar one moment where Glen has to quiet them because he is “rocking out up here!” The lyric in ‘In These Arms’ is changed to, “If you vote for that asshole, he’s going to do you harm.” Glen mentions Van Morrison having played the Fillmore many times, probably up to quite recently. He says it’s sometimes a challenge to find your own space in a room where so many greats have played. The Frames are introduced for a set of old songs (and a Pixies cover). A couple called Dan and Ashley, who had come straight from their wedding reception, are invited on stage (in full wedding garb) for ‘Gold’ and are serenaded amplification-less by Glen and Colm, as if minstrels. Jordan Cook (aka ReignWolf) who played upstairs earlier is invited up with his electric guitar and tears the room to pieces, accompanied halfway through by Graham doing his best John Bonham. He later joins the band on tambourine for a joyful version of ‘Don’t Do It’. Glen doesn’t seem to want the last night of the tour to end, hanging on stage until cleared for a final song, pushing the gig to 2 hours and 45 minutes.
