“Actually, our biggest fear of the night came after Glen Hansard’s opening set: Could Vedder match it? Frankly, we’re still not sure. After bowing to the headliner with an opening ukulele version of “Pennies in the Fountain,” Hansard tore into Swell Season highlights like “Leave” and “Low Rising,” realizing every bit of those loud-quiet dynamics we love about his original (-ish) band, the Frames — but with only his tattered acoustic and megaphone voice. When Hansard arrived at a cover of Van Morrison’s “Astral Weeks,” we were pretty much overcome by his arrow-straight sincerity, cute storytelling, and humongous stage presence. That cheerful Irish lilt didn’t hurt, either.”
